The PICkit 3 is a programmer and debugger designed for developing electronic projects based on Microchip PIC microcontrollers. It allows you to upload programs to compatible microcontrollers and debug their operation directly in the circuit through the ICSP interface. Its USB connection makes it easy to use with a computer.
Supplied with a lever-operated ZIF socket, this kit makes it easy to insert and remove compatible DIP-package microcontrollers without applying excessive force to their pins. This allows you to program a component outside its circuit before installing it in your project. Socket compatibility depends on the microcontroller’s pinout and the adapter configuration.
Function: programming and debugging compatible microcontrollers through the ICSP interface.
Computer connection: USB 2.0, with a mini-USB Type-B connector on the programmer.
Programmer power supply: powered through the USB port.
Target supply voltage, VDD: adjustable from 1.8 to 5 V, with approximately 30 mA available to power the target. More demanding circuits require an external power supply.
Programming voltage, VPP: ranges from 1.8 to 14 V, depending on the microcontroller’s requirements.
Supported microcontrollers: compatible devices from the PIC and dsPIC families, depending on the specific model and software version. Check support for the exact device before use.
Software environment: works with versions of MPLAB IDE, MPLAB X IDE, or MPLAB IPE that support both the PICkit 3 and the selected microcontroller.
Included socket: ZIF adapter for compatible DIP-package components. Device placement and adapter settings must follow the adapter’s instructions.
This kit can be used for learning microcontroller programming, practical laboratory work, prototyping, and embedded system development. Its programming and debugging functions allow you to upload a program, test its execution, and troubleshoot errors on a compatible target device.
Here are some project ideas you can develop using a compatible PIC microcontroller:
Miniature traffic light: control LEDs with programmed timing sequences.
Digital thermometer: read a temperature sensor and display the measurement.
Automatic irrigation system: control a pump according to soil moisture levels.
Electronic alarm: monitor a detector and activate an alarm.
Digital counter: count pulses or objects and display the result.
Motor controller: control motor speed using an appropriate program.
The PICkit 3 is used to program and debug the microcontroller. Sensors, displays, relays, and power circuits required for these projects are separate components.
